External drive not detected

A drive that appears nowhere is usually power, cable or port before it is dead. The documented checks in order, what each error code means, and the states that fool the eye.

Do not keep replugging, and do not format or initialise a drive that briefly appears. One careful pass through the documented checks is worth more than an evening of unplug-replug cycles, and a drive that comes and goes is usually a failing drive, not an empty one waiting to be formatted.[1]

A drive that appears nowhere, not in File Explorer, not in Disk Management, sometimes not even in Device Manager, is usually a power, cable, port or hub problem before it is a dead drive. Microsoft's own checks and every drive maker's run in the same order: power first, then cable, then port, then another computer. What you find along the way decides whether this is a five-minute fix, a warranty case, or a job for a professional recovery service.

This guide covers an external or USB drive that does not appear at all on a Windows PC, with the Mac equivalents where vendors document them. It does not cover a drive that is visible but will not open, an internal SSD missing from the BIOS, or a drive making new noises; each has its own guide, linked below.

What 'not recognized' actually means

Windows' message is more literal than it sounds. 'USB device not recognized' means the last device you connected malfunctioned or has a driver problem, per Microsoft's documentation, and its companion notice about power, that the device might need more power than the PC provides, is the single most common external-drive cause. Further down the stack, Device Manager speaks in codes: Code 43 means Windows stopped the device because it reported problems, with uninstalling and reinstalling the device as Microsoft's recommended step. Drivers deserve one special note: SanDisk's documentation states that no additional software is required for a drive to work, with drivers delivered by Windows and macOS updates, so third-party driver-updater utilities are solving a problem that does not exist.[2][3][4]

Power: the most common cause

External drives are the thirstiest things most people plug into a USB port, and the documentation treats power as the first suspect everywhere. Microsoft's fixes for under-powered devices are to power the device externally, put the PC on mains power rather than battery, and disconnect other USB devices. Microsoft also names hubs and docks as a cause and says to connect directly. Western Digital's version adds the original cable, and notes a quality powered hub can deliver more wattage than a standard port, with desktop adapters straight into the wall. Toshiba's Dynabook documentation describes the strangest member of this family: drives seen as a USB device but never as a hard drive, fixed on some computers with a Y cable that draws power from two ports at once. On the Mac, Apple documents a 'USB Devices Disabled' state for exactly the same reason, with the same direct-connection fix.[5][3][6][7]

The documented order of checks

One pass, in this order

  1. Connect the drive directly to the computer, powered if it has a power socket, with nothing else sharing the port or a hub.
  2. Use the drive's original cable, or swap to a known-good data cable; Western Digital notes a cable can work with one computer and not another.
  3. Try a different port. Microsoft's Disk Management sequence for a missing external disk starts with unplug, replug and Rescan Disks, then port, cable, and another PC.
  4. In Device Manager, look for the drive under Disk Drives, or as an unknown or mass storage device with a warning icon; uninstall it and scan for hardware changes, Microsoft's documented remedy.
  5. Try a different computer. If the drive misbehaves there too, Microsoft's guidance treats that as evidence about the disk, not the PC.
  6. Check the drive's light and power adapter: Seagate's troubleshooter starts there for desktop drives, with the adapter straight into the wall.

One piece of popular forum advice to ignore: disabling USB selective suspend. Microsoft documents it as enabled by default and strongly recommends not disabling it. Nothing on this page needs it changed.[9]

It appears somewhere but not everywhere

In Device Manager but not Disk Management

This means the USB link works but the drive is not presenting a disk. Seagate's troubleshooter reads the codes for you: a Code 10 on the drive probably means the drive itself has failed, with data recovery or warranty as the routes; Code 28 and 43 get the uninstall, reboot with the drive disconnected, reconnect on a different port sequence. Encrypted drives have their own trick here: Seagate documents that some locked drives show as uninitialized and unallocated until unlocked, which looks exactly like a dead drive and is not one.[8]

In Disk Management but not File Explorer

Two harmless explanations live here. A volume can have a file system but no drive letter, which makes it invisible in Explorer while fully present in Disk Management; Microsoft documents adding a letter through the Change Drive Letter and Paths option, and Seagate's troubleshooter reaches the same step. And capacity panics are usually arithmetic: Seagate notes a 1 TB drive showing about 931 GB is expected, because manufacturers and Windows count bytes differently. If nothing detects it

When no port, cable or computer shows anything, Microsoft names the most common reason for a disk that is missing or will not initialise: the disk is failing. The same guidance says to stop at the first step that works, update your backups, and notes that some unreadable disks are not recoverable; a data recovery lab is the route it names when files are vitally important. A note on BIOS panic: a data-only USB external drive normally never appears in the BIOS boot list, so absence there usually means nothing; the internal-drive version of this problem has its own guide.[1]

What not to do

No replug loops: Microsoft's sequence allows one unplug-replug and rescan, and a drive that only sometimes appears is its own warning that backups are overdue. No driver-updater utilities: the vendors document that no extra software is needed. No formatting a drive that briefly appears; if it holds files, that is a recovery case, not an empty drive. And if the data is irreplaceable and nothing detects the drive, stop: the remaining routes are warranty and professional recovery, and the first careful description you give the lab beats a hundred more attempts.[1][4]
