Why is my hard drive beeping?
A beeping hard drive is not playing a warning tone: the drive has no speaker, and the beep is its spindle motor being powered without managing to spin the platters. On external drives the usual trigger is insufficient USB power, which you can rule out safely with a different cable, port, or computer. If the beeping continues once power is ruled out, stop reconnecting the drive: the fault is inside the sealed case, and repeated attempts can make recovery harder.

A hard drive that beeps is not playing you a warning sound. A mechanical hard drive has no speaker, so it cannot broadcast a coded message about its health. What you are hearing is the spindle motor, the part that spins the platters, being powered and failing to turn. Most of the time on an external drive that means the drive is not getting enough power from the port, which is a safe problem to rule out with a different cable, port, or computer. If the beeping survives those checks, the cause is mechanical, inside the sealed case, and the right move is to stop, power the drive down, and leave it alone.[1][2]
What the beeping sound actually is
Inside a spinning hard drive, platters rotate on a spindle driven by a small motor. When a drive powers up properly, that motor spins the platters up to full speed in a couple of seconds and the drive makes a short whir. When you hear a steady beeping instead, the motor is receiving power and cannot turn. Recovery engineers describe the beep as the sound of the motor being energized and failing to spin. It is a physical sound, like a strained electric motor, not a signal the drive is generating on purpose.[1]
Two faults inside the drive produce that symptom. The read/write heads can stick to the platter surface, a condition engineers call stiction, which holds the platters as if the parking brake were on. Or the spindle motor's bearing can seize, so the motor has nothing to turn. A recovery lab listing the likely causes of a beeping drive names broken or stuck heads, jammed heads, a broken or seized spindle motor, a shorted circuit board, and a broken port or cable. The last item on that list is the one you can fix at a desk, and it is worth ruling out first.[1][3]
Why external drives beep: power first
Portable external drives have no wall adapter. They take all their power from the USB port they are plugged into, and spinning platters up takes a real surge of it. Seagate's own support guidance says that when an external drive beeps this can be due to insufficient electrical power, and that a drive can require more power than the port or cable is providing even if it never beeped before. The same guidance notes that most beeping occurs with USB-powered drives, the ones without a separate power adapter. A reply on Western Digital's community forum about a beeping Passport drive lists the same candidates from the other direction: low or no power, a broken cable or USB port, a spindle motor problem, or stuck heads, with power first.[4][2]
That is why the port matters more than people expect. An unpowered hub splits one port's output between several devices. A charging-only USB port on a phone charger was never designed to run a drive at all. Consoles are a common place to meet this problem, because a drive attached to a PS4 or Xbox is bus-powered just like it is on a computer, and if it beeps on the console but behaves on a computer, that pattern points at the power available from that port rather than at a broken drive. Work through the same power checks before you conclude the drive has failed.[2]
Beeping is not clicking
The two sounds people describe on a struggling drive are different, and they point at different problems. Beeping with no spin-up is the motor failing to turn, usually for lack of power. Clicking or chattering during normal file copies is, by Seagate's description, ordinary drive noise while data is read and written. What matters is change: the same guidance warns that a changed sound, or an excessive grinding or clanking noise, may signal a physical problem. A loud, repeating click in a steady loop is the classic sound of a drive with failing heads, which is a different fault with different rules.[2]

What to do
Rule out power, safely
- Stop trying things and leave the drive unplugged while you read this. Powering a beeping drive down protects the data on it.
- Take the drive off any USB hub and plug it straight into the computer.
- Try a different USB port. On a desktop computer, use one of the rear ports.
- Swap in a different USB cable that you know works.
- If your drive's cable has two USB plugs (a Y-cable), connect both, so the drive gets the most power the ports can give.
- Try the drive on another computer. If it behaves there, the original machine was not supplying enough power, and a powered USB hub may sort out the first one.
- If it still beeps after all of that, stop. The fault is inside the sealed drive, and nothing more at the desk will help it.
What not to do
Do not keep unplugging and replugging a beeping drive to see if it catches. Recovery engineers warn that every reconnection strains the motor against the stuck heads and risks tearing the head assembly, turning a recoverable fault into a worse one. Do not open the drive's case to look inside: home air is full of dust, which wrecks the platters the moment it gets in. Do not put the drive in a freezer either. That old trick causes condensation inside the drive as it warms back up, corroding the components and frequently making recovery impossible. If the data on the drive matters to you, these rules are not optional.[3][1]
When a recovery lab is the route
If the power checks did not silence the beep, the fault is mechanical, and fixing it means working inside the drive in filtered air. A head problem needs advanced tools and a certified cleanroom, and recovery labs are candid that work done outside that environment has a much lower chance of success. The encouraging part is the direction of travel: a beeping drive that arrives at a lab powered off and unopened is described as having an excellent chance of a full recovery. Every re-plug and every unscrewed case takes away from that.[3]
