What is clean room data recovery?

Short answer

A clean room is a filtered-air work space where a hard drive can be opened without dust reaching the platters, and recovery that requires opening the drive happens there. Physically damaged drives need that environment and logical recoveries do not, and the ISO class a lab quotes is a claim about its own facility.

A clean room is a work space where the concentration of airborne particles is controlled, with filtered air and regulated temperature and humidity, so a hard drive can be opened without dust settling on its platters. Recovery that requires opening the drive happens in one. The reason is mechanical: in a modern drive the gap between the read heads and the spinning platters is so small that a single grain of dust reaching the surface can permanently damage the mechanism, and even a small amount of dust can cause permanent data loss.[1]

When a drive has to be opened

Clean-room work is particularly necessary when a device is physically damaged. Those are the jobs where a technician has to open the enclosure and expose the platters, and an opened drive no longer keeps fine particles out. Replacing a failed read-head assembly, freeing a seized motor, and some firmware repairs all mean opening the drive.[1]

Jobs that never open the drive do not need one. Deleted-file recovery, partition repair and most other logical problems are handled through the drive's own data connection with the enclosure closed, so the dust risk never arises. If the fault is in the file system rather than the hardware, no clean room is involved.[1]

What the class numbers mean

Clean rooms are graded on the ISO 14644-1 scale. The class is set by how many particles the air carries, measured with a particle counter, and the classes run from 1 to 9, with 1 the cleanest; classification is expressed entirely in terms of airborne particle concentration. Two points from Ontrack's explainer: an ISO class 5 room holds a maximum of 100,000 particles per cubic meter, while an ISO 8 room holds a maximum of 29,300 particles of 5 micrometers per cubic meter.[1][2]

Some lab websites still say Class 100. That is older American terminology: the federal standard that used it was canceled on November 29, 2001 and superseded by ISO 14644-1 and ISO 14644-2. No source checked for this page gives a conversion between the old numbers and the ISO scale, so treat any class a lab quotes as a claim about that lab's own facility. Ontrack, for example, describes its own rooms as ISO 8, and says it operates 18 clean rooms worldwide with more than 200 data recovery engineers.[1][2]

What it means for your drive and your bill

For you, the clean room shows up as logistics and price. Physical cases mean your drive ships to a lab, because the work cannot be done on your desk or in a repair shop's back room. Maintaining that environment is part of a lab's overhead, one reason quotes for physical damage come back higher than quotes for files lost to software problems. Do not open a failed drive to look inside, in any room. The head-to-platter gap is so small that a single grain of dust can permanently damage the mechanism, and once particles reach the platters the loss can be permanent. If the data matters, leave the enclosure closed and let a lab do the opening.[1]

Questions that get useful answers

  1. Which ISO class is your clean room, and is that the room my drive would be worked in? Labs quote different classes: Ontrack describes its own as ISO 8.
  2. What stands behind the claim: certification, independent inspection, or approval from drive makers? Ontrack, for example, says its laboratories and clean rooms are approved by major hard drive manufacturers.
  3. Is my case physical at all? If the diagnosis finds the drive reads reliably, clean-room work may not be part of your quote.
