Memory card emergency: the field card

The camera says: card error / cannot access / write protect

  • Stop shooting on that card. Power off and swap to a spare card; keep the problem card as it is.
  • Do not format it in camera or in a computer, even when the prompt insists. Formatting before recovery is the mistake that loses pictures.
  • Do not keep re-inserting it or trying different cameras. Each attempt is another chance to write to the card.
  • Write-protect switch on SD cards: check it is not slid down. That one is free to fix.

Photos deleted by mistake (card is healthy)

  • Deleted photos usually stay on the card until new files overwrite them. Taking more pictures is the risk, not the deletion itself.
  • Do not review-and-delete on the camera to “tidy up” before recovering.
  • Recovery needs a computer card reader, read-only software, and saving results somewhere else.

On assignment: the three-habits version

  • Shoot through: fill a card, then flip it write-protect or pocket it. Do not reuse cards on a paying job.
  • Two copies before the card is reused: ingest to the laptop, back up to a second drive, then, and only then, format in camera.
  • Format in the camera it will be used with, at the start of a job. Never format to fix an error.

When it is out of DIY territory

  • The card is cracked, bent, hot, or went through water: no reader, no software, no tape repairs. A lab works on the memory chip itself.
  • No computer can detect the card at all: software cannot read what a reader cannot see.
  • The card came from a phone in encrypted (adopted) storage mode: it only opens on that phone, and a lab question replaces a software question.
  • The pictures are the job. Price in a professional assessment before spending attempts on it.

Why these rules

Camera cards almost always use file systems where deletion frees the space rather than erasing the pictures, which is why undeleted-soon recovery usually works and overwriting usually does not. Camera and vendor guidance about format prompts differs by make and model, but on one point it agrees: a format is a write operation, and writes are what destroy recoverable pictures.
